In 2019, RECA partnered with the City owned and operated Elisabet Ney Museum for its annual Christmas in October philanthropic project. Located in the heart of Hyde Park, the museum is the former studio and home to the portrait collection created by 19th century sculptor Elisabet Ney, who was an iconoclastic German sculptor who moved to Austin in 1882. Ney has had her work featured at both the Texas Capitol and National Capitol and with over 30,000 visitors per year, the local museum celebrates her art, her history and her legacy through exhibitions and family-friendly events.
Though well-known and centrally-located, the Elisabet Ney Museum is a gem that was not polished. After 6 months of planning by RECA's Christmas in October leaders and committee, major upgrades and renovations that were completed on the volunteer day included upgraded fencing, new lighting throughout the site, a new sign to display upcoming events, the repainting of an on-site bungalow, improved crushed limestone trails and seating and a new temporary platform to host events.
"On behalf of the staff and friends of the Elisabet Ney Museum, please accept our deepest gratitude," said Museum Director Oliver Franklin. "Needs that the museum has had for decades have been fulfilled by this incredibly gracious gift. The museum and the community at large are a better place as a result of your help."
