This year the Leadership Development Council selected Sammy’s House as the beneficiary for the Christmas in October project. The mission was to select an organization that had the greatest need for our services and one we felt passionate about supporting. It became very apparent that the facility at Sammy’s House was in desperate need of our help in order to continue providing their services to the community for years to come.
What impressed us the most about Sammy’s House was the unique service they provide for the families in our community. The nonprofit organization was formed because of a strong need for therapy, support, curriculum-based instruction, and child care services for children who are medically fragile and/or developmentally delayed. Sammy’s House helps parents with childcare services that otherwise wouldn’t exist and creates an environment where everyone has a chance to grow and learn to the best of their ability.
Isabel Huerta, the founder and executive director of Sammy’s House, started the program in her living room when the help she needed for her son Sammy Huerta didn’t exist. Sammy was born with Down Syndrome and multiple birth defects. Isabel used her teaching background in biology to create an educational model that was formulated for children with unique abilities. As the program continued to grow Isabel had more children join her program, including children who didn’t have developmental issues, which started their inclusion model. Now the program is able to serve a large number of families in the facility they have today, but they still need your help.
The fundraising event for the Christmas in October project is August 31, 2016. It will be a fun, family-friendly summer picnic affair with burgers, activities and games for adults and children. A raffle and silent auction will include items from Amy’s Ice Cream, Alamo Drafthouse, SXSW tickets, Trader Joe’s, Kelly Wynne, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Kendra Scott, Amazon (an Amazon Echo!) and more that we’ll announce soon. This will also be a great opportunity to learn more about Sammy’s House, meet Isabel and mingle with others that have helped support this effort. Learn more and make your donation to attend here.
All of the proceeds from this fundraising event combined with the donations from other supporters will go towards the Christmas in October volunteer project on October 22, 2016. These efforts will allow for the re-design and renovation of interior/exterior living and play spaces at Sammy’s House to create a safer and healthier environment for the children. None of this would be possible without the help from our sponsors. It is uplifting to know we live in such a generous city and see everyone come together to help Sammy’s House so they can continue to provide services to underserved children. Please come out and support this great organization!
